Shade and Traffic Tolerance of Bermudagrass and Zoysiagrass
نویسندگان
چکیده
Shade and traffic can reduce turfgrass coverage and playability on both golf courses and sports fields. Five cultivars of bermudagrass and seven cultivars of zoysiagrass were planted in the summer of 2007 and maintained under typical golf course fairway and sports field conditions. Plots were shaded continuously beginning spring 2008 with a 50% light reducing fabric. A second study was implemented using the same plot space to determine traffic tolerance. Digital image analysis was used to measure turfgrass coverage for evaluating shade and traffic tolerance of cultivars. The objective of this study is to evaluate cultivars and species for differences in turf coverage in response to continuous shade as well as simulated traffic. Patriot, Tifsport, and Zenith had poor shade tolerance compared to other cultivars tested in the trial. Meyer, Palisades, Patriot, and Zenith had poor traffic tolerance regardless of the shading treatment. These findings will help turfgrass managers select cultivars and improve playing conditions under conditions of high traffic and/or reduced light.

Stop #1: Improvement of Bermudagrass, Kikuyugrass, and Zoysiagrass for Winter Color Retention and Drought Tolerance
California is suffering from a serious drought and the future of turfgrass and other landscape plants has never been more uncertain. Use of drought tolerant plant species should be at the forefront of water conservation management plans for golf courses and other landscapes. Warm-season or C4 grasses are better adapted to warmer, drier climates and use at least 20% less water compared to cool-s...
متن کاملEvaluation of turfgrass species and cultivars for potential resistance to twolined spittlebug (Hemiptera: Cercopidae).
Potential resistance to the twolined spittlebug, Prosapia bicincta (Say), was evaluated among 56 turfgrass genotypes. Greenhouse, laboratory, and field bioassays identified differences in spittlebug survival and development, host preference and damage levels, and turfgrass tolerance to and ability to recover from pest induced injury. All centipede grasses demonstrated high levels of susceptibil...

متن کاملDiversity and Occurrence of Plant-parasitic Nematodes Associated with Golf Course Turfgrasses in North and South Carolina, USA.
One hundred and eleven golf courses from 39 counties in the Carolinas were surveyed for plant-parasitic nematodes. Species diversity within habitats was analyzed with five diversity indices including Diversity index (H'), Evenness (J'), Richness (SR), Dominance (λ) and Diversity (H2 ). The results revealed a remarkably high diversity of 24 nematode species belonging to 19 genera and 11 families...
